Phae always accompanied her brother, Merrow, when he made his monthly trip to a nearby human city. One day while her brother was trading herbs, Phae heard a commotion outside the store. When she stepped outside, she found a redheaded boy weeping over his mother who was just trampled by Shinma's horse riding guards. The evil knights showed no sympathy for the boy, in fact- they accused the boy's mother of injuring some of their horses! The boy, though, wasn't afraid and talked back to the cruel warriors who in turn threatened to hurt him. But! Just before any of the soldiers could make a step towards the child, Phae knocked them all off their horses and dispatched them one by one in a matter of seconds. Merrow was in shock when he walked out of the store and saw his sister had knocked out a group of Shinma's men- for Merrow and the elves had a peace treaty with the tyrant Shinma! Before matters got worse, Merrow transported his sister, the wounded woman, and her son back to the elven city. There, Merrow attended to the injured woman named Suki who slipped into a coma from the traumatic event. Meanwhile, Phae took care of the boy called Umi. She learned that the boy, his mom, and dad were foreigners from the Eastern continent- they were war prisoners who were sold into slavery to Shinma and taken far away from their homeland. Phae continued to listen to the poor child's life story and by the end, she was determined to cheer him up. Umi wanted to learn how to cook for his mom so Phae searched their libraries and found a book of Eastern recipes. Together, they cooked, baked, and concocted all sorts of Eastern delights. Umi became quite the little chef- he was so precise that Phae showed him how to make the medicine for his mother along with other herbal remedies. When Umi excelled in apothecary, Phae offered to teach him the ways of the Ranger which he eagerly accepted- he developed skills in tracking, fishing, hunting, wilderness survival, swordplay, and dual wielding. When Suki awakened, her son was right by her side with her favorite Eastern dish he prepared (and hunted!) from scratch. The two humans were accepted by the elves and they lived there in peace for a couple of years... until Shinma's son arrived with Lia. It was no longer safe for anyone of them to stay. Both Lia and Phae were attached to the kids and decided not only to escort them back to the Eastern land, but to be their personal guardians. Its been 10 years since Phae had left home and now, she is returning to the Western world, leading Eiko and Umi along the way.

Author's Notes: That's right! Here's an "Oh, Brother!" character who will be appearing in Chapter 3! She's a girl, I know, but she's so badass (I might have to make a separate reference sheet JUST of her weapons). XD I haven't decided if I wanted to draw all of her armor... might be difficult, but! How am I going to get better if I don't challenge myself? XD Anywho, one down, two more to go!
